“The Messengers” was the #1 movie in America heading into this weekend. I love ghost stories and spooky stuff in general, so I made a point of seeing it yesterday.
A) Not scary.
B) Not well-written.
C) Not well-acted (I’m looking at you, Dylan McDermott).
The thrills and jump-out-of-your-seat moments were telegraphed to an almost comedic extent. The “twists,” such as they were, transformed the otherwise flimsy ghost story into a ridiculous slasher film. And it all wrapped up with a happy ending that was completely insulting.
For haunted house thrills, I’d redirect potential filmgoers to Richard Matheson’s book “Hell House” or even to rent “the Grudge.”
