Marvel Comics is killing one of their marquee characters, WWII icon Captain America, in issue #25 of his current series. Don’t reach for the funeral clothes yet…no comic book death is ever truly permanent. It’s fair to say that the Star-Spangled Avenger will return at some point down the road (if it’s not already in the works for later this year).
Still, it’s a ballsy move. In killing off their house symbol of heroism and American ideals, Marvel has made a powerful (intentional?) statement about the United States, circa 2007. We’re at war. A major Presidential election is right around the corner. The rest of the world is looking at us more cynically every day. Even in comic book fiction, America and what it stands for are in trouble.
Curse you, Iron Man. This is all your fault.
