90s in 90 Days #26: METAL

In the late 90s, rock and metal were ready to take a warrior’s broadsword to the wounded body of the alternative nation.  The standout Chicago bands from that movement–Relative Ash, Disturbed, Loudmouth, and SOiL among them–were textbook Chicago in that they weren’t textbook anything.
Says Shaun Glass, guitarist and founding member of SOiL, currently guitarist of Dirge, “For every genre of Chicago rock or metal, none of the bands ever sound alike.  There’s something different about some of the bands here.  They don’t sound like every other band on the West Coast or East Coast.  I think it sounds more real.”

90s in 90 Days

Over the course of 90 days (not consecutive, though I’ll try), I’ll be offering up a capsule look at something about Chicago music from the 90s.  It could be a radio memory.  Thoughts on a song, show, band, or album.  Maybe a review aided by hindsight.  Whatever it is, it’ll be original content just for this site, and not found in my book.
