90s in 90 Days #52-The Handsome Family

The Handsome Family released their eighth album earlier this year, and that got me thinking about their time here in Chicago.  A few years back, lyricist Rennie Sparks told me about the beginning of the of the alt/country (Americana? Traditional gothic?) group’s beginnings.
“It was not a serious pursuit at first, but something we did on weekends in the hopes of getting some free beer. About 1998 we started getting serious about the band and started making some money. We haven’t had any other jobs besides this one since then.”

90s in 90 Days

Over the course of 90 days (not consecutive, though I’ll try), I’ll be offering up a capsule look at something about Chicago music from the 90s.  It could be a radio memory.  Thoughts on a song, show, band, or album.  Maybe a review aided by hindsight.  Whatever it is, it’ll be original content just for this site, and not found in my book.
